Q & A: Preventing Mold Growth In Humidors

Q.
How can I make sure mold will not grow inside my humidor?

4/30/16 | by MS of Roseville, CA

A.
Unfortunately, mold growth inside humidors is a very possible situation. All mold spores need to grow is some moisture, a cozy temperature, and something to grow on. Since the optimal humidity for storing cigars is around 65 to 70% relative humidity, it is highly susceptible to mold if kept at higher temperatures for too long. Temperatures from around 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit are the most conducive for mold growth, so it is important to keep your humidor in a normal, room-temperature environment as often as possible. The hotter it is, the more likely it is for mold to begin growing on the interior wood of your humidor or the cigars themselves. If you are unsure, always keep a hygrometer on hand to get an accurate reading of both the humidity and temperature inside your humidor. Also, after refilling your humidifiers make sure to wipe the exterior dry before placing back into your humidor to prevent any dripping that can cause wet spots on the interior wood.

Review: Alec Bradley Post Embargo

Dave The Future Cigar Landscape
Unveiled as a pre-release at the 2015 IPCPR Trade Show, Alec Bradley Post Embargo pays homage to cigar history in the aftermath of the Cuban embargo and symbolizes a future landscape where Cuban and non-Cuban brands can compete on a level playing field. A dark brown Corojo wrapper grown in Honduras is seamlessly applied and gently box pressed to perfection around a core of Nicaraguan and Honduran long-fillers. Once lit, you’re palate overwhelmed with a complex flavor profile dominated by pepper and rounded out with slight hints of mocha and caramel on the finish. The burn line was nice and thin and the ash was compact, holding form for the entire first third of the cigar. The strength clocked out at medium to full-bodied. Alec Bradley Post Embargo truly encapsulates that Cuban-esque style of clean and balanced yet rich in flavor.
