Spotlight Brand: Gurkha Yakuza

October 23, 2015 |

Gurkha’s boldest offering yet.

The Japanese Yakuza is a feared, international organized crime syndicate who are known for their copious tattoos and missing pinky fingers. In conceptualizing Gurkha Yakuza, the brand knew it had to come up with an exceptionally strong and robust blend to live up to the Yakuza legend, so a Connecticut leaf will not be found. A blend as special as Yakuza shouldn’t come with run of the mill packaging, so in true Gurkha style, Yakuza cigars are packaged in an intricately hand-carved box. Each humidor-style box is individually hand-carved on 5 sides by a Nicaraguan artisan in the style of traditional Japanese tattooing, and comes with a 2-tiered lift out tray that can hold up to 50 premium cigars.

Gurkha Yakuza kicks down the door with four different helpings of ligero, and comes dressed in a dark, oily Ecuador Habano wrapper. Beneath the sheets you’ll find a fierce long leaf blend of premium Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos with a feisty Nicaraguan binder. Gurkha Yakuza is full-bodied and memorable, with flavors of leather, spice, espresso, nuts, and charred oak, lending to a satisfying and complex cigar.

Q & A: Comparing Types of Cutters

Q.
With the numerous types of cutters out there, which type is the best to use?

A.
Like everything else in cigars, choosing what type of cutter to use is simply based on your preference. Each style has its own pros and cons and only after experimenting with a few types will you learn what your exact preference is. Here’s a quick rundown:

Review:

Sean G A perfect everyday blend.
Full disclosure, I used to love Padilla Hybrid. I’d fire one up most mornings when I got into the office and pair it with a nice, dark espresso. Needless to say, when I saw these hit our docks again, I rushed to stock up. SPOILER ALERT: They’re still delicious. Hey, knock me for being biased but I’d be hard-pressed to find a cigar this good starting at $1.99 each. The mellow to medium-bodied blend hits all the right spots with rich smooth notes of cedar, almonds, vanilla and hints of spice on the finish. A great morning cigar for an enthusiast who normally enjoys fuller-bodied cigars. Sure, I won’t be firing one of these up on a special occasion but enjoying one every morning makes it feel like every day is a special occasion.
