Q & A: Wood Blocks In Boxes?

Q.
Why do some boxes I buy have a random wood block in them?

A.
Those wood blocks are also known as "dead men" and they take the place of a cigar in oddly shaped boxes or in boxes containing an uneven number of cigars. Manufacturers use these wood blocks for presentation purposes, so when you open up an oddly shaped box of cigars or an oddly numbered box, the cigars still appear even and uniform. These wood blocks are sometimes made of cedar and can impart extra aromas or flavors upon opening the lid, but they are mostly used for presentation and can be thrown out without worry.
