Poul Nielsen, the creator of the Stanwell pipe started the company in 1942 to provide Danish pipe smokers with pipes. Briar was impossible to import after the war and the first Stanwell pips were made of beech wood. These pipes provided a steady revenue for the new company. Once briar was available to import, Stanwell started to manufacture pipes from only the highest quality briar. Over 70 years later, Stanwell is still one of the major pipe producing companies in the world.
