overview

'95' rated. Arguably the finest blend of all-time.

Rolled with specially selected Ligero leaf, Oliva Serie 'V' packs a punch due to its full body; however, its strength does not dominate the experience. Specifically aged for a longer period of time than usual, the extra-fermented tobaccos make for an extra-complex flavor profile with layers of pepper, leather, and earthy undertones. This line represents the most intense tasting and richest cigar Oliva has to offer.

To be an authorized Serie 'V' dealer, tobacconists must undergo training from Oliva representatives aimed at providing insight to the unique qualities of the blend. This cigar only contains Ligero leaf (the thickest, darkest leaves on the plant, taken from the top layer), but this 'Special Ligero' is so well-aged, and blended with such precision, the experience is not overwhelming with 'in your face' power. In other words, while Serie 'V' IS quite a potent cigar, it can still be enjoyed by enthusiasts who usually prefer medium-bodied blends.

Upon lighting, Serie 'V' does seem medium in body. But if you cycle the smoke through the nose (retrohale), the strength of the blend will materialize. You will get not just a blast of spice, red pepper, and cacao bean, but also a natural sweetness that perfectly balances Serie 'V''s profile. Potent, powerful, yet smooth with a luxuriously long finish, this '95' rated blend is a must try for all cigar lovers.

Alex All Summer Long
If you are like me, you seem to have a new favorite cigar every month.  No matter my favorite at the time, I do tend to have that mainstay list of five or so brands that I just find myself always reaching for.  This month, I am deviating away from my “flavor of the week” picks to a mainstay in my rotation and a long time favorite, Oliva Serie V.  This cigar debuted in 2007 (to much acclaim with a 94 rating from Cigar Aficionado and the No. 4 spot on their annual Top 25 list that year) and in my humble opinion was a pioneer blend setting the standard today for what a full bodied cigar should really be all about.  Unlike the full bodied selections of the day which were crafted with the sole purpose of blowing your face off, Oliva brought the horse power with V but with a refined elegance and balance a true connoisseur can appreciate.  The secret to the sauce in this blend is the slow, patient and lengthy fermentation that the ligero fillers undergo which takes out all the bite and leaves all the flavor and goodness in a thick and creamy smoke presentation that still delivers just the right shot to your gut reminding you that it is still as strong as it is flavorful.  Forget about notes of “this” and nuances of “that”, this cigar is 100% good old fashioned tasty tobacco that envelopes the palate completely and leaves a long finish.

All I Want For Christmas
Oliva Serie ‘V’ changed the way the industry and enthusiasts looked at full-bodied cigars.  It was the first to specially ferment a ligero-heavy blend to provide a robust flavor that remained smooth and balanced.  Fast forward more than 5 years later, the Serie V still wears the crown. This is what a true classic tastes like

Why He Likes It: This Oliva blend is the apex of strength and beauty. Serie ‘V’ is a potent cigar, but never over-powering, with cascading, savory notes of cedar and leather and a commanding, spicy finish. The ‘94’ rating only adds to the allure of this legendary blend. Passing this one over would be a crying shame, although it would leave some more for me.

Torpedo (6.0"x56) This is the most preferred size in this blend. The stick is very easy to light and draw. It burns cool and the strength is very consistent from start to finish. The ligero qualities are not noticeably dominant until the last three inches. The finish contains many hints of pepper, but is very rich as well. Perfect balance.

Churchill Extra (7.0"x52) Again, very easy to light. The draw was not as loose, but this stick is pleasantly complex. The finish is very strong and hints of cocoa and espresso are evenly experienced throughout most of the smoke. These nuances then transform into strong hints of pepper and earthy undertones which can be easily noticed lingering in the back of the palate. A well constructed cigar producing lots of creamy smoke, this size is only second to the Torpedo.

Double Toro (6.0"x60) Noticed more cedar notes and chocolate nuances in comparison to other sizes. As expected, the draw is very smooth but the strength contains very little bite for being a 60 ring gauge. The smoke is very creamy and has an excellent aroma.

Double Robusto (5.0"x54) This size begins with some intense strength and flavor from the first puff. The nuances of coffee and earth seem accented in comparison to the other sizes. Noticeable spicy nuances are prominent throughout and this cigar has a strong, but pleasant finish.

Special V Figurado (6.0"x60) The shape is unique but causes a hassle when lighting. There is almost no flavor for the first couple of puffs and it gradually increases until the first inch is reached, then this stick really gives off some strength. It is well constructed, like the other sizes, but drastically mellows out after the first 2 inches are surpassed. Coffee flavors are very dominant on the palate and this size did burn very evenly.

Belicoso (5.0"x54) Noticed this stick burns very slow, even, and is incredibly smooth for the amount of peppery flavors it produces. Leaves a subtle taste of wood and cocoa on the lips, but the smoke is not as milky as expected. Burns a bit hotter in comparison to other sizes.

Lancero (7.0"x38) Due to its small ring gauge, the draw is very tight. The stick does burn even and slow but the heat can be felt on the fingertips. Tastes a lot stronger than the other sizes and the spicy notes are more noticeable over the coffee-like flavors.
