Flavor / Balance.La Gloria Cubana is one of the most flavorful cigars made in the Dominican Republic today.
If you’re a long-time fan of the La Gloria line, Artesanos Retro Especial will strike you first with its lighter than usual wrapper. Using a unique Honduran-grown Connecticut tobacco leaf, this wrapper translates into big flavor with a smooth finish. This blend isn’t a powerhouse, but it’s definitely one of the most flavorful Connecticuts on the market. Starting off with traditional Connecticut creaminess, this blend evolves into a medium-bodied burst of pepper, earth, and cedar before completing with a smooth, solid finish.
I have to start by saying I have never been a huge fan of La Gloria Cubana. Maybe I've just never had a good, memorable experience with the brand, or perhaps I simply smoked duds in the past. I also tend to prefer medium to full bodied cigars.
That being said, I very much enjoyed this cigar and it exceeded my expectations. As a mild cigar goes, this one has a fair amount of flavor. For the first 2/3's of the cigar, it is primarily creamy and has notes of vanilla and a spice flavor that I could only describe as nutmeg. Not much pepper in there at all. Moving into the final 1/3, the cigar picks up strong notes of cedar. The only thing I did not enjoy was the harshness that surfaced towards the very end of the smoke. Otherwise, it was very enjoyable and a nice surprise for me. I'd say give it a shot. Great mild cigar.
