Classic brand, classic Cuban-esque flavor.
Hoyo de Monterrey is an older cigar brand born in Cuba in the 19th century. Since its inception, it remains one of the most recognized names in cigars, and boasts the very best in quality and flavor since production moved to Honduras in 1969. Today. the cigars are rolled in the famous Villazon Factory in Honduras. The production is carefully monitored by cigar master Estello Padron. Villazon is also home to many other well-known pre-Castro brands, such as Punch.
The Excalibur line debuted as the fuller-bodied blend of Hoyo de Monterrey. The top 10% of the tobacco crops grown in Nicaragua and Honduras is reserved for the Excalibur line. The unique blend of tobaccos gives this cigar a very hearty aroma, and a dry and spicy finish. While production has moved from Cuba, the traditional cultivation and natural fermentation process originally utilized by Hoyo de Monterrey has not changed. These cigars have a very classic and traditional Cuban allure.
Expert Picks: Connecticut Summer
Hoyo de Monterrey offers a solid lineup of cigars, including one of my standbys: Hoyo Excalibur. A Connecticut leaf surrounds Nicaraguan and Honduran fillers for a combination that gives this blend a medium body. Notes of spice and wood which are complemented by a satisfying creaminess, this is a cigar that will never disappoint.
