Spotlight Brand: Kristoff Ligero Maduro

April 3, 2011 |

Satisfy your craving for richness.

Hailing from the Dominican Republic, Kristoff is a super premium cigar that competes with the likes of Arturo Fuente, Davidoff, and Graycliff. The company only employs the most qualified Cuban master blenders, all of who have generations of experience in cigar making.

Kristoff's most recent release. Compared to Kristoff Maduro, Ligero Maduro offers a stronger, full-bodied experience. The filler blend contains premium Cuban-seed Nicaraguan and Dominican long leaves but comes wrapped with a Cuban-seed Dominican binder and a Brazilian maduro ligero wrapper. This particular leaf creates a bolder, heartier character with balanced sweetness.

The special ligero wrapper on this cigar creates quite a unique flavor when burned together with the blend's Cuban-seed binder and fillers. Unlike Kristoff Maduro, which creates earthy, peaty flavors with a sweet finish, Kristoff Ligero Maduro presents rich nuances of earth, cocoa, and spices with a coffee-like finish. On the finish, you may notice some cherry aromas mixed with cedar. A great-tasting cigar.

Q & A: Barber-pole Cigars?

Q.
I've seen barber-pole cigars before but never tried one because they seem expensive. What's the big deal?

A.
Barber-pole cigars are some of the hardest to roll and therefore their wrappers can only be applied by the best torcedors at a factory. The most common barber-pole cigars feature two wrappers - a Connecticut and maduro - while others may contain three or more different wrapper leaves.

Review: Cuba Libre One

Dave Cuba Libre One
Robusto (5.0"x52) Very nice cigar. Full-flavored and full-bodied but it doesn't overwhelm your senses. You'll notice ample spicy characters and a semi-sweet finish for a well-balanced experience.

Churchill (7.0"x52)
Due to the 7-inch length, you'll find the power of this cigar continues to increase as the blend burns. By the time you reach the fourth inch, you're palate will be coated with oily notes of pepper and you won't find any sweetness. Recommended for experienced aficionados.

No. 2 Belicoso (6.1"x52)
Great size but not for this particular blend. It delivers complex flavors and keeps your interest from head to foot but avid enthusisasts may consider this a medium-bodied cigar since it's super smooth. We recommend cutting a lot off the head of this belicoso as it'll create a stronger, full flavor and an easier draw.

Toro (6.0"x52)
Great size for everyday enjoyment or to hand out. Offers the best in terms of balance as you'll find sweetness, pepper, spice, earth, and cedar. Only downfall is the fact that this stick never progresses into a stout, super-complex and full-bodied blend such as the robusto and churchill sizes.
