Q & A: When Should I Ash My Cigar?

Q.
What's the ideal time to ash my cigar?

Like anything with cigars, it’s completely up to the enthusiast. However, the general rule of thumb is to wait as long as you possibly can before you tap the ash off the end of the cigar. Why? The ash acts as insulation to the part of the cigar that is lit. As long as this “insulation” holds, the cigar burns cooler allowing for a smoother flavor. When the ash of the cigar is removed, the lit part of the cigar is exposed to more air and burns hotter. Because of the hotter burn, the smoke is hotter and will taste harsher. Looking for a cool, slow-burning cigar? Keep the ash on as long as possible.
