jsnake:Behind The Stick: I was chatting with Guillermo Léon one day on Twitter and he asked if I would be interested in trying the La Aurora 107 Corona and giving him by feedback. When I told him I was writing for this website he asked if David would be willing to review the cigar also and I told him we would do a dual review for him and give everyone 2 opinions in one review. Guillermo liked the idea of a dual review and had samples sent on his behalf courtesy of Miami Cigar Co to both David and myself. La Aurora was founded in 1903 and is the oldest cigar factory in the Dominican Republic. The La Aurora 107 is named for the 107th anniversary of the company. “La Aurora is more than a factory; it is my family’s heritage. From my father, I inherited the passion and commitment to make the highest quality cigars. I am honored to continue the legacy of the Léon family in our second century by creating distinctive cigars tailored to the tastes of today’s smokers. I invite you to rediscover the new La Aurora.” – Guillermo Leon. For a more detailed history please visit the La Aurora 1495 review. Construction: David: I gotta say these cigars are just a beauty – the rich colored Ecuadorian wrapper just glistens with oils, the band popping with yellow background and the image of a lion across the dark brown wrapper. Evenly packed from head to foot, this smaller ring gauge appeared to have been rolled by a master – I couldn’t find a single issue with any of the sticks. A couple of the veins looked a little bigger than I had expected but they never caused an issue. Jacob: The cigar band is very nice and features a lion, detailed gold coins, and is very eye catching. La Aurora and 107 are displayed well and there is no doubt what cigar you have picked up. The wrapper is a very oily and shiny. The Corona wrapper is a dark chocolate color and for some reason is darker then the Belicoso. The wrapper has small veins and seams with a somewhat leathery appearance. The cigar has no soft spots and appears to be packed extremely well. Flavor: David: I have to say, starting this off I am a little bias, for two reasons. I love smaller ring gauges, give me a 38 or a 40 over a 60 any day and secondly I prefer the spicy, leathery, earthy wood flavors – so before I give it all away, on with flavors! Starting from the beginning the natural tobacco flavor of course ran the background but was accompanied by a very flavorful chocolate and cinnamon that seemed to ebb and change places for 1st. Once the cigar had lived most its life, the earth and wood flavors I talked about earlier really came into light and lasted till the end without getting bitter – just makes you want to light up another! Jacob: The pre-light aroma is of spicy tobacco with a hint of cinnamon. The cigar lights well and starts off with spice and nuts dominating the flavor. The smoke is plentiful and the draw is just right. The burn is self correcting keeping in mind I just received this and they had very little time in the humidor. The cigar transitions into a leather and woody flavor and the spice subsides half way through only to pick back up towards the nub. The end of the cigar finishes full of flavor with a smooth creaminess. There is a chocolate sweetness mixed with the flavors of nuts and wood. The ash held firmly with a uniform charcoal coloring. Overall: David: Even though the flavors did not change every puff nor was this a cigar I’d consider in comparison to some of the high end Cubans – but – I have to say for a 45 min smoke this stick was very complex and will be in my regular rotation to and from work – perfect timing. I was able to smoke a few on my way home from work and the nice nicotine kick with some very distinct and well balanced flavors make this a top pick in my eyes. It seems like every time I smoke one it gives me just enough of what I’m looking for but leaving my hanging at 99% – guess I have to buy more! The price, hype, delivery and projected availability makes this a smoke I really can not wait to put into my weekly rotation. Jacob: In describing all of the flavors and changes in the cigar it is hard to relay to you the depth of them. I guess what I am saying is the cigar flavor is very bold and satisfying. While I have experienced the same flavors in one degree or another in other cigars this one stands out. It is as if you ordered a steak and potato instead of a salad for dinner. This cigar has a wonderful richness and complexity at the end that really impressed me.
jsnake:Illusione ~2~ Size: 5.25 X 52 Wrapper: Nicaraguan Rosado Oscuro Corojo Binder: Nicaragaun Filler: Nicaragaun Price: $8 to $9 range Behind the Stick: I picked up this Illusione ~2~ at Just For Him in Springfield, Missouri which offers a fantastic selection of Illusione Cigars. Dion Giolito says, “The concept behind illusione cigars is relative to Faith in God and our constant struggle between good and evil.” He created the brand to recreate a specific taste profile from years past before the Sandinistas took over Nicaragua. It seems that Dion has put his heart and soul right into these cigars. Every number in the illusion cigar line has a certain meaning. “~2~ And Crowned of Thorns No explanation here is really needed. 2 is the son of God doing battle against evil, the enlightened one, the soul-saver, all forgiving.” This is a cigar brand made by a man who has passion and purpose behind what he is doing. Please visit www.illusionecigars.com to learn more. Construction: The illusione ~2~ is a short torpedo shaped cigar. The wrappers is a light chocolate color with reddish tint, slightly rough texture, and veiny. The rough texture seems fitting with the branding and concept behind the cigars. The cigar features a superb triple cap, spicy chocolate pre-light aroma, solidly packed tobaccos, and no give when squeezed. Pre-light draw reminded me of cinnamon. The Flavor: Spicy, spicy, spicy! The illusione ~2~ starts off with peppery with a slightly sweet spiciness that grabs your attention. The burn was perfect, draw was just right, the smoke was plentiful, with a brilliant white ash. The spiciness seemed to pick up and peek about 2/3rds in and then slowly subsided at an even pace to the end. I experienced an array of flavors including coffee, dark chocolate, and roasted nuts. There is an underlying sweetness and a hint of cinnamon throughout. The ash appeared to be holding solid at 1 ½ inches. Overall: This is the first and only illusione Cigar I have ever smoked and it was everything I expected and more. I seriously can’t wait to try the other blends from illusione. Since these are made in small batch quantities they are sometimes hard to find. The illusione ~2~ is definitely box worthy and if you are lucky enough to find an unopened box I would recommend buying it fast. The price is fitting with what you get in this cigar. There is a story and sense of mystery or conspiracy behind these cigars. Dion created a unique brand and blended a fantastic cigar.
