  • Fuente Fuente Opus X and Pepin Cuban Classic

     12-25-2009, 11:07 AM

Recently took a trip to the local cigar bar with my girl and some good friends. One friend in particular that I haven't seen in a while, so between that and the holidays coming up, I wanted to celebrate with a few good smokes. I brought with me one of my Fuente Fuente Opus X cigars that have been resting for some time now (about a year or a little more) with the intentions of picking something up while there.

First, I decided to grab a Pepin Garcia Cuban Classic Robusto out of their walk-in after recommending it to one of my buddies (turned out there were 3 of us smoking that cigar at that table). For those of you who haven't smoked one of Pepin's blends, do so. They tend to be wonderful, complex smokes that typically start off with a handful of spice and eventually mellow out. The Cuban Classic takes that and really brings the spice to the table throughout most of the cigar. Not an overwhelming spice, but subtle and blended enough to make it very enjoyable. Some sweet wood notes also take part here. With an even burn, tons of flavor, lots of rich smoke, this one is highly recommended.

After some pizza, garlic bread and half of my cognac, I pulled out the FFOX. The unlit smell was a wonderful barnyard smell of sweet tobacco and hay. Not as much spice on the cap as I'd expected, but that could be do to a year of rest. The cigar performed absolutely perfectly in every way. Tons of smoke, slow, even burn, NEVER got hot or harsh - all the way down to the nub. The flavors were of subtle spice, sweet cedar, leather and that tobacco/hay barnyard that I got on the pre-light. Overall an incredible experience of a cigar that I didn't want to end.

Good Friends, good drinks, good pizza, good smokes and good conversations. It was a fun night. Happy Holidays everyone!

It's been way too long since I've posted a review. I've had a couple decent cigars in the past few months, but today the weather was actually nice enough when I got home from work to sit outside with a stick. I reached for the Diesel sent to me by Squirrel (thanks, bro) that I've been dying to try. I've heard a lot about these cigars and all of it seems to be good, but I tried not to let that get my expectations up too much.

Pre-light, the cigar didn't really bring much. I got some tobacco and an earthy scent, but not much more. It clipped and toasted perfectly and opened up with beautiful notes of wood, spice and tobacco. Some cocoa notes were in there as well and after about an inch, I started getting this sweet taste (more of an overall sweetness on the tongue with no discernable flavor) that balanced out the cigar nicely. Toward the last inch or so, I started getting some harsh/bitter notes, so I ended up putting it out there. Overall, it was a great cigar - medium in body (I had it on an empty stomach and didn't feel anything - and I haven't been smoking much lately).

I had the same problem near the end of the cigar though I was about an inch and half or so. Nice wriete up btw.

thanks. And thanks again for the cigar(s). Even with the bitterness, I really enjoyed the cigar up to that point. Seems like it may age out in time, but still a solid stick as is.

I had a Diesel last week and picked up the flavors you did as well. I really loved the sweetness to the cigar that helped to balance out the powerful flavors. Mine was perfect to the nub, though. Think I only have two or three left... gotta get more!
    It's BORKs not BOTLs

There is no blender but Litto Gomez, and I wish I was his merchant.

You guys seem to pick up the same flavors I do, though I wasn't all that impressed with it. I'll have to give it another run in a bit. I have 2 left I think.

  • Gurkha Triple Ligero

     04-24-2010, 11:33 AM

Just finished a Gurkha Triple Ligero Special Edition 2002 (not sure if the SE 02 means anything as I haven't looked into it enough). The cigar started out with a well balanced bouquet of bold flavors of cedar, earth and a touch of leather with a dry, papery aftertaste. Half way through, a strong bitter note began to dominate the profile and eventually left a very ashy (think cigarette ashtray) aftertaste. Overall, not as impressed as I had hoped or was in the first few inches of the cigar.

Just curious..... what price point did you get it at?

It was given to me in a trade, so I can't say. I have one or two more from trades as well. I'll probably re-visit it before I completely dismiss it as a bad cigar, but I have a feeling it was just the blend that I didn't really like.

Interesting, I usually enjoy TL from gurkha. I've never had the SE though.. never heard of it.

  • Casa Fuente

     05-20-2010, 11:58 AM

Had a few cigars recently, but only one that I don't see reviews for too often so I figured I'd put one up. A friend of mine went to Vegas a few months ago and brought me back a Casa Fuente house cigar (Torpedo/Belicoso). I let this one rest for a while in the humi but didn't want to give it too long. I know he's going back in June and offered to pick up more, so I figured I should try it. Glad I did without having him buy me more.

This cigar was very nicely constructed with a beautiful ornate band (what else would you expect from the Fuentes for a limited edition cigar) aside from a small piece of wrapper missing under the ribbon on the foot of the cigar. The unlit smell was sweet tobacco and slight baking spice. After clipping the head, the pre-light draw gave off a wonderful taste, distinctly of pumpkin oatmeal cookies. Something I'd never tasted before in an unlit cigar, I was excited to get this going. Big mistake. Once I lit this cigar, all I got was......paper? Absolutely no taste whatsoever. I was patient and waited until about the half way point before I finally gave up, tossed it and poured myself a glass of wine.

ouch, the pre-light sounds yummy. Must have been a bad stick or something, you should have kept it, mailed it back and demand a stick or two for compensation.

I think the band that says Triple Ligero also has SE 2002 in small print.
  • God of Fire: Don Carlos (2006)

Picked up two of the GOF DC 06 with the lighters on here fairly recently and have been staring at them ever since. Finally lit one up yesterday and was completely disappointed with this stick. Maybe I got a bad one in the bunch, but The wrapper was cracked in a few spots before lighting and cracked and split even further while I was smoking it. Not what I would expect from a Fuente super premium.

On top of bad performance, the flavors just weren't there. It started off ok with some wood and slight sweet notes. Surprisingly, no spice in there at all. About an inch in...bitter. This continued until I finally just put it out and tossed it in total disgust and disappointment about half-way through.

This puts me at 0-3 with Fuente super premiums latley (Casa Fuente was completly flavorless and the Lost City just lost my attention and failed to wow). Not looking good. I've also noticed the latest opuses that I've had just weren't nearly as good as the older ones I have stashed away. What the hell are those guys doing? Have they given up on quality now that they have the undivided attention (not to mention, wallets) of more than half of the cigar world?
