  • Fresh off the Plane.....

I probably should start off with a formal introduction, or a clever little annecdote or something. Whether fortunately or unfortunately for you, I just stepped off a plane from Esteli, Nicaragua and there's really nothing else on my mind.

It was just 48 hours ago that I was standing at the front of room, looking out at over 50 pairs of cigars rollers and dozens of other employees at the peak of the production day at Tabacalera Fernandez. Everyone is diligently focusing on their job or "piece of the puzzle". Not only is each and every employee working quickly and with precision, they are all genuinely happy. Happy to be a part of what is undoubtedly a growing phenom of sorts.

This factory, located in the heart of Esteli, Nicaragua is home to one of the most promising new faces in the cigar industry, AJ Fernandez. In a matter of a few years, AJ has climbed his way to the top of the heap of some of the most famous stars in the cigar industry. To watch him work, is to see a man obsessed with the only thing he ever had any interest in... tobacco.

Chances are, Tabacalera Fernandez is home to cigars you already know and love. These blends, such as Sol Cubano Artisan, RP Signature, and Indian Tabac 10th Ann., and soon to come, Sol Cubano Cuban Cabinet  have quickly found a home among serious smokers due to one simple fact. AJ's methods of fermentation and aging produce tobacco that is not only at it's absolute peak of flavor and balance, but the flavors and nuances his cigars posess are totally and completely unique. In fact, to me it's more than unique flavors, it's more like a signature, AJ's signature.

I should let you know that I'm not easily "wowed" by a cigar. Sure, there are alot of good cigars out there, but the great ones are a little less commmon in my book. While sampling dozens of possible new blends I found myself in an enitirely new predicament. There were a number of blends I sampled that were great, and most for completely different reasons. Some were so sweet and creamy, while others toasty, earthy and rich. After 5 or 6 gems, I started questioning my pallet, the water, jetlag. But it occured to me, when you love what you do to the extent of AJ, when you take the risks and forge ahead the way he has, perfection is the only option.

I am happy to report there are a number of cigars on the horizon from AJ, cigars which he has poured his dedication and passion over. Keep your eyes open and clear space in your humidor, there's a new kid in town.
