Gurkha is a brand with many line extensions. The company's president, Kaizad Hansotia, focuses his attention on strict quality control and unique, rare packaging. Gurkha cigars are considered some of the most super-premium blends in the world and are enjoyed by society's elite social groups, including heads of state and even the Sultan of Brunei. Gurkha Ninja comes wrapped with a toothy maduro leaf hailing from Brazil's most prominent growing region. Inside rests an aged mixture of Nicaraguan long leaves concealed by a Dominican binder. Expect light complexities surrounding an earthy core while sweet cocoa flavors rest on your palate during the finish. The blend produces smooth, creamy smoke with an excellent aroma and features a moderate price point. Packed in stylish wooden boxes of 20, Gurkha Ninja is a great addition to this premium brand.
When I first unwrapped the cigar, I was very impressed by the appearance. The wrapper was dark and shiny. However, when I held it under my nose and sniffed the wrapper my only thought was, "this does NOT smell nice." It had a bland odor, like an old stale smell. It also felt hardened as if it had dried out or improperly stored. I decided to let it sit in the humidor for awhile. Once a week I would check on it and that stale scent slowly faded away. Finally, after 10 weeks later, I decided to light it up. By this time, it smelled very similar to the other cigars I had. (Mostly Man O Wars). At first light it tasted like dirt. There was a slight kick of spice but it mostly was dirt. Maybe dirt with some tan bark over it. I took it down to about halfway. The dirt mellowed down a little, but the overall taste was like a dusty pepper. There was some burn issues as well. The smoke smelled old. The final 1/3 of the stick was slightly more enjoyable, only because my taste buds were numbed by then. Perhaps my expectations were too high. I have a feeling I simply received a bad stick by chance and that another one could be a totally different experience. But thats not what I'll be doing anytime soon.
